A Personal Experience

At my inauguration as an elected official I swore an oath of office that includes, amongst other things: "the commitment that private interests will not influence my conduct in public matters; that I will govern with fairness and transparency; and that I will uphold the core values of equity and inclusion and consider the impacts of my decisions on future generations."

In this presentation I will describe situations at the Council table that pose barriers and ethical dilemmas in regards to these three oaths of office.

About our Speaker

Adriane Carr earned an MA in urban geography from UBC, taught for 12 years at Langara College, and worked for two decades to grow Western Canada Wilderness Committee into one of Canada’s most effective conservation groups. In the 1990s she led the campaign to resolve the conflict in Clayoquot Sound, establishing a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve there. She is known as a leader in Green Politics: co-founding and leading the Green Party of BC, serving as Deputy Leader of the Green Party of Canada, and being elected as Vancouver’s first Green City Councillor. She was re-elected to Vancouver City Council in 2014, garnering more votes than any Councillor in Vancouver’s history.
